Geraldine Rayfield

Geraldine Rayfield was born on March 9, 1925 to Perry and Charlotte Rayfield in New Orleans, Louisiana. Geraldine was baptized at an early age. She attended the local public schools in New Orleans. Geraldine was cheerful, resilient, and enjoyed life. A few hobbies she enjoyed were playing the piano, gardening, puzzles, and watching quiz shows. She was also an educator. Her educational career began when the family moved to Oakland, California in 1943. She earned her state teaching credential in education from San Francisco State University. She later received her Master’s in Education from the University of California, Berkeley. Her first teaching position was at Cortez School in Richmond, and later at Martin Luther King Elementary, formerly Pullman Elementary, where she taught classes for 19 years before she was appointed a math and reading resource teacher. Geraldine was a past president of the Richmond Chapter of the Association for Childhood Education. She was a member of the Richmond District Math Council. After studying computer programming, she taught computer classes to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Martin Luther King Elementary School, bringing to a close a career in the field of education 38 years. Geraldine departed this life September 30, 2021 from the Heart and Soul Community Board and Care Facilty. She leaves to cherish her memory, three first cousins, Carolyn Young of El Cerrito, California; Eugene Tatmon of Emerald Hills, California; Delores Johnson of Oakley, California; and few family members and friends, as well as her family from her care facility.
