Obituary Obituary Carmen (Nena) Z. Avila Vasquez, from Peru passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, CALIFORNIA at the age of 89. She was born on January 24, 1934. She was born in Southern Peru, in the city of Puno, the daughter of Carlos Avila and Martha Vasquez. Carmen, who was known in her family as Nena, was the eldest of two children. She was married and had three children, Zoraida Ada, Jose and Hugo Alberto. She had five grandchildren, Paola, Carmen, Stacy, Patricia & Bryan and three great grandchildren Armando, Jaime and Alissa. Carmen was a proud educator, she taught high school for 27 years. She started her teaching career in the rural parts of Puno, in the Aymara regions, eventually moving to Lima. Her specialty was Literature and became the head of the Department of Language and Literature at Carlos Weisse High School in Lima from where she retired. She had many interests including journalism and dance, specifically Peruvian native dances and started both a journalism and dance troupe at said school. Upon her retirement, she and her mother Martha moved to the United States. She loved being around children, she would say it kept her in touch with-her inner-child. When she had the opportunity to join the Metas Program at Contra Costa College for a weekend tutoring program, she excitedly accepted. She developed a math, English and art curriculum for second through fourth graders and worked with the program for about 10 years until about 6 years ago. She would travel back and forth between her beloved Peru and her new homeland. She was a very proud naturalized US Citizen and would participate in every election she could when she was in the US. program for about 10 years. She willl be missed by her children, and extended family and friends in the US and Peru. In addition to her mother Martha Carmela, her son Jose (Pepito) and her brother Hugo Armando preceded her. Carmen (Nena) Z. Avila Vasquez , de Perú falleció el viernes 28 deabril de 2023 en el Hospital Kaiser Permanente en Oakland, CALIFORNIA a la edad de 89 años. Nació el 24 deenero de 1934 en el sur de Perú, en la ciudad de Puno, hija de Carlos Ávila y Martha Vásquez. Carmen, conocida en su familia como Nena, era la mayor de dos hermanos. Estaba casada y tenía tres hijos, Zoraida Ada, José y Hugo Alberto. Tuvo cinco nietos, Paola, Carmen, Stacy, Patricia y Bryan y tres bisnietos: Armando, Jaime y Alissa. Carmen fue una educadora orgullosa, enseñó en la escuela secundaria durante 27 años. Comenzó su carrera docente en las zonas rurales de Puno, en regiones aymaras y finalment e se mudó a Lima. Su especialidad fue la literatura y llegó a ser Directora del Departamento de Lengua y Literatura del Colegio Carlos Wiesse de Lima, de donde se jubiló. Tenía muchos intereses, incluido el periodismo y la danza, específicamente las danzas oriundas peruanas y comenzó un grupo de periodismo y otro de danza en dicha escuela. Al jubilarse, ella y su madre Martha se mudaron a los Estados Unidos. Le encantaba estar rodeada de niños, decía que la mantenía en contacto con su niñez interior. Cuando tuvo la oportunidad de unirse al Programa Metas en Contra Costa College para proveer tutoría los fines de semana, aceptó con entusiasmo. Desarrolló un plan de estudios de matemáticas, inglés y arte para estudiantes de segundo a cuarto grado y trabajó con el programa durante 10 años hasta hace unos 6 años. Viajaría de ida y vuelta entre su amado Perú y su nueva patria. Era una ciudadana estadounidense naturalizada muy orgullosa y participaba en todas las elecciones que podía cuando estaba en los Estados Unidos. Sus hijos, familiares y amigos la extrañarán en los EE. UU. y Perú. Además de su madre Martha Carmela, la antecedieron su hijo José (Pepito) y su hermano Hugo Armando.
