Brandon Mark Smettler

Brandon Mark Smettler-Roberson was born on June 18, 1986 in Oakland, California to the parents of Kim D. Smettler (deceased) and Kenith Roberson. Brandon attended Montessori Children’s House of Hayward, Lorin Eden Elementary, Anthony W. Ochoa Middle school, Mt. Eden High, and Oakland Technical High school where he played football his senior year. Brandon also played little league baseball as a youth. As a child Brandon spent a lot time with his grandmother (Nony) Shirley Holland at her home in Manteca, CA going to the water slides, taking care of animals, going to church, visiting family, and most importantly, eating her food. Brandon spent a lot of time with his friends as a child and into adulthood. He always had a warm smile to greet you with and something funny to say. If you became friends with Brandon he’d let you know by treating you like family. Brandon believed in fair treatment of people and spending time with family and friends. Brandon had signed up for Chabot College and was looking forward to starting work with his brother, John. He was on a positive path to achieving his goals and wanted to help out his friends the moment he got the chance. He grew into a strong responsible young man who always had a good attitude, loved to laugh and make others laugh, he loved his family and friends. The first time Brandon met Charles and John was in the living room when our mother Kim D. Smettler introduced us. The love from family and friends for Brandon grew every day and continues to grow. We miss his smile, his attitude, his style of dress, and how he conveyed his emotions. Brandon was a lot of things to a lot of people. Sometimes he called himself “The Mayor of Hayward” or the “The General” but most knew him as “Pink” or simply Brandon. Some might wonder how a dude like Brandon was called “Pink.” As a young child Brandon was wild and rebellious and as a result of his wildness, our mother Kim put that belt on him many times. His close friends would tell him that his booty was pink from all of those run in’s with his mother’s belt. Somehow or another his friends started calling him “Pink-booty” and as he got older the “booty” fell off and he was just known as “Pink.” He was a son, a friend, a brother, a father to some, and without a doubt he was a fierce protector and a positive enforcer of those he loved and cared for. Everyone around him knew that and they loved him for it. If you asked “Nony”, our grandmother, she’d tell you that he was big teddy bear that could do no wrong in her eyes. She’d tell you that she loved her grandson and was willing to do anything to help him grow up into smart and responsible individual. Brandon’s size can definitely be attributed to our grandmothers cooking. During those summers spent with his grandmother all throughout the years, she will miss Brandon calling her “Nony “. She will miss his smile and miss him. Brandon loved his “Nony”. Our late mother, Kim D. Smettler would tell that Brandon was her baby, her youngest child. She loved him to no extent. She climbed mountains, walked on water, and fought fires for Brandon that few will ever know. Brandon would resist what was best for him, as all children do but our mother would always show him patience and understanding. Our mother called him “Nini-Popa” when he small child as well into adulthood at times. Let’s just say it took him a while to start feeding from a bottle. She loved Brandon. John would probably tell you that he was his best friend, brother, and father at times. John doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve but without a doubt his love and emotions ran deep for Brandon. Brandon knew this. They were as close as could be and Brandon truly looked up to John and respected what John had to say. Brandon listened and loved John for it. Charles would say that he wanted the best for his little brother, even though his little brother was bigger than him. Charles and Brandon had the typical older brother young brother relationship. They loved each other but sometimes they didn’t see eye to eye always. When they did see eye to eye it was a great thing. Charles loved Brandon and would do anything for him. Brandon knew this and loved Charles for it. His physical stature and infectious smile will always be remembered. He truly fit his presence with his bigger than life persona and bravado … A gentle giant, and a true warrior … A one of a kind dude! Brandon Mark Smettler departed this life on July 30, 2015 surrounded by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kim Denise Smettler.
