Isaac Lamont Mitchell

Isaac Mitchell came bursting into the world full of love and vivacity on October 19th, 2003. The halls of Alta Bates, in Berkeley, Ca. were buzzing with family and friends caring gifts for mommy and baby, as he made his debut on her birthday. His room was filled to the brim with presents showered upon his mother, Erica Mitchell. His big brother, Isaiah Lawson, couldn’t wait to take up the task as his protector and confidante. Isaiah begged for a baby brother even before he knew Erica was pregnant or what the gender of the baby was. While his grandmother and aunt, Karen and Arion Webb, couldn’t wait to envelope the new bundle of joy with love. Arion was like a second mom to him. She always wanted to feed, clothe, bathe and change his diapers when he was a baby and she continued this same level of care his entire life. He was the center of everyone’s universe and those closest to him wouldn’t have it any other way. Isaac was a Berkeley kid through and through. He attended the New School of Berkeley for preschool and daycare. His love of animals inspired the career goal of being a zoologist early on. He then went to Malcolm X Elementary, where he discovered his love of the sciences by frequenting the Lawrence Hall of Sciences and Exploratorium. Many people were blown away at his brilliance. As quoted by one of his peers, “Isaac is the smartest kid I know!” Later, he thrived at Realm Middle School and for his high school career, he attended Ralph Bunche High School in West Oakland, Ca. Isaac was in his senior year. He was newly interested in learning about cryptocurrencies and the stock market. On May 10th, 2021, Isaac was just presented with an award for his academic prowess and perfect attendance by the Oscar Wright 20th Annual Celebration of African American Academic Excellence from the Oakland Unified School District and the Office of Equity, Oakland. His dream was to continue his academic career at the University of California, Berkeley. Isaac truly walked to the beat of his own drum. He attempted to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and pick up a sport. Isaac tried out for baseball and made the team but, chose not to play after one game. Erica humorously recalls Isaac’s short-lived career in sports by saying, “I think Isaiah playing so many sports while Isaac was growing up, really burned him out early on. He enjoyed being his brother’s fan and that was the extent that it reached.” As a teen, Isaac enjoyed playing basketball for leisure at Strawberry Creek Park, in Berkeley and playing video games. Isaac always enjoyed fashion. He was very particular about his look, even as a toddler. While his peers were wearing baggier, hip-hop styled brands of clothing, he loved cargo shorts and Vans. He wore them like a uniform for his own brand of cool. Pretty soon, his friends would follow suit. Isaac’s classmate joked that he talked them all into asking their parents for hundred dollar skateboards and accessories. All because Isaac thoroughly convinced them it would make their lives cooler. Remember what we said before, Isaac walked to his own beat yet, many other enjoyed his “music” and was along for the ride. Isaac adored his family and friends. He took pleasure in just being together watching movies, cooking, doing projects and taking family trips. He would accompany his mom and great grandmother, Alice Jefferson, on planes and trains travelling all over the United States. He caught the travel bug early from his Jefferson side of the family. He has a host of friends, and their families, that all loved him like he was their own. Tyler, William, Nico, Eric, Simon, Kaden and Gustavo were like brothers to Isaac, knowing them all, most of his life. Isaac always made it a point to spread love and appreciation for others in reciprocity for what he was shown. Preceded in death, his grandmother Karen Webb and uncle Dwayne Larry were forever in his thoughts. He is survived by his mother, Erica Mitchell, brother, Isaiah Lawson, aunt Arion Webb, cousin Dwayne Larry, Jr. and a host of family and friends. His memory will be cherished for the rest of our lives.
